In August of each year, children from across the country return to their ancestral homes in La Bureba. Soccer goals are reset and windows are flung open on the stone and adobe houses. The dust lifts for a moment. Yet many church doors remain locked. Surrounding the shut portals are monsters. These silhouettes were lifted and disassembled from portals in Lences, La Hermosilla, and Soto as well as from illuminated manuscripts from Beatus, an 11th century Iberian monk. The children of Barcina added beauty, blood, and town pride.
